Sclerotherapy is a treatment for varicose or spider veins. In this procedure a substance known as a sclerosant is injected into the veins, which causes them to shrink and eventually disappear. The veins stop working and are absorbed by the body, making them less noticeable.
Sclerotherapy Pre-Treatment Preparation Guidelines
To prepare for sclerotherapy treatment, please follow these guidelines closely as these factors may impact the efficacy of the treatment as well as healing time :
Avoid Blood Thinners:
Stop taking aspirin, ibuprofen, and other anti-inflammatory medications at least 48-72 hours before treatment, as these can increase the risk of bruising. Always check with your doctor before discontinuing any prescribed medications.
Do Not Drink Alcohol or Smoke:
Avoid alcohol and smoking for 24 hours prior to your appointment, as both can interfere with healing and circulation.
Stay Out of the Sun:
Avoid sun exposure and tanning for several days before the procedure, as tanned skin may increase the risk of hyperpigmentation.
Wear Loose Clothing:
On the day of the treatment, wear loose, comfortable clothing to avoid irritation at the injection sites.
Do Not Apply Lotion Or any Skincare To The Affected Area:
Refrain from using any lotions, oils, or moisturizers on your legs or the areas to be treated before the procedure.
Bring Compression Stockings:
It may be a good idea to wear compression stockings after the procedure as they can minimize bruising, swelling, and discomfort, while decreasing the likelihood of complications like hyperpigmentation or new varicose veins forming
Following these steps will help ensure your skin is ready for the treatment and can promote better results and faster recovery.
Sclerotherapy After-Care Instructions
Wear Compression Garments
Wear compression stockings or bandages as instructed by your healthcare provider. Compression helps to reduce swelling and improve the effectiveness of the treatment.
Avoid Excessive Physical Activity
Avoid strenuous exercise and activities that may increase blood flow to the treated area for the first 48 hours. Walking is encouraged to promote circulation.
Pain Management After Sclerotherapy
Mild discomfort, bruising, and swelling are common after sclerotherapy. You may take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen if needed. Avoid aspirin and NSAIDs.(Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Celecoxib, etc.)
Avoid Sun & UV Exposure:
Protect the treated areas from direct sunlight for at least 2 weeks. Use sunscreen with a high SPF to prevent hyperpigmentation.
Keep Hydrated
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Proper hydration can help with the healing process and reduce the risk of complications.
