Pre-Treatment & Aftercare Guide

Sclerotherapy Pre-Treatment & After Care Instructions

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a treatment for varicose or spider veins. In this procedure a substance known as a sclerosant is injected into the veins, which causes them to shrink over time. The veins stop working and are absorbed by the body, making them less noticeable.

Pre-Treatment Preparation Guidelines

To prepare for sclerotherapy treatment, please follow these guidelines closely, as these factors may affect the treatment and healing time:

  • Avoid Blood Thinners: Stop taking aspirin, ibuprofen, and other anti-inflammatory medications at least 48–72 hours before treatment, as these can increase the risk of bruising. Always check with your doctor before discontinuing any prescribed medications.
  • Do Not Drink Alcohol or Smoke: Avoid alcohol and smoking for 24 hours prior to your appointment, as both can interfere with healing and circulation.
  • Stay Out of the Sun: Avoid sun exposure and tanning for several days before the procedure, as tanned skin may increase the risk of hyperpigmentation.
  • Wear Loose Clothing: On the day of the treatment, wear loose, comfortable clothing to avoid irritation at the injection sites.
  • Do Not Apply Lotion or Any Skincare to the Affected Area: Refrain from using any lotions, oils, or moisturizers on your legs or the areas to be treated before the procedure.
  • Bring Compression Stockings: It may be a good idea to wear compression stockings after the procedure, as they can help minimize bruising, swelling, and discomfort, while reducing the likelihood of complications like hyperpigmentation or new varicose veins forming.

After-Care Instructions

  • Wear Compression Garments: Wear compression stockings or bandages as instructed by your healthcare provider. Compression helps to reduce swelling and support the effectiveness of the treatment.
  • Avoid Excessive Physical Activity: Avoid strenuous exercise and activities that may increase blood flow to the treated area for the first 48 hours. Walking is encouraged to promote circulation.
  • Pain Management After Sclerotherapy: Mild discomfort, bruising, and swelling are common after sclerotherapy. You may take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen if needed. Avoid aspirin and NSAIDs (Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Celecoxib, etc.).
  • Avoid Sun & UV Exposure: Protect the treated areas from direct sunlight for at least 2 weeks. Use sunscreen with a high SPF to help prevent hyperpigmentation.
  • Keep Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Proper hydration can support the healing process and reduce the risk of complications.
  • Follow-Up: Attend your scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and discuss any concerns with our team.
  • Watch for Complications: Contact us immediately by text at 416-939-9357 and email info@deabeautyclinic.com if you experience severe pain, redness, warmth, or swelling in the treated area, as these could be signs of infection or other complications.
  • Patience and Expectations: Results from sclerotherapy may take time to fully appear. Multiple treatment sessions may be needed. Be patient and follow the recommendations.
