What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation treatment that uses a sterile, surgical-grade blade to gently glide across the surface of the skin. The goal is simple – to lift away the buildup of dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (often called “peach fuzz”) that can leave skin looking dull or feeling rough. The result is typically a smoother, brighter complexion right after your appointment, with no needles, chemicals, or heat involved.
How It Works
Your esthetician will cleanse the skin, then hold it taut while carefully moving the blade at a shallow angle across the face in short, precise strokes. This physically removes the outermost layer of dulling skin cells along with vellus hair, without cutting into living tissue. Because it’s a purely physical exfoliation, there’s no downtime involved – many clients head straight back to their day, makeup and all.
Does the Hair Grow Back Thicker?
This is one of the most common questions we hear, and it’s a persistent myth worth putting to rest. Removing hair above the skin’s surface does not change the hair follicle itself, so vellus hair grows back exactly as it was – fine, soft, and light in colour. It may feel a touch different for a day or two simply because the tip is blunt, not because the strand itself has changed. Most peach fuzz is so fine that regrowth typically isn’t noticeable at all.
Who Is a Good Fit?
Dermaplaning can be a great option for those dealing with dull or rough texture, visible peach fuzz, dry or flaky patches, or anyone who wants an extra glow before a special event. It’s generally well suited to most skin types, though it’s typically not recommended during active acne breakouts or flare-ups of certain skin conditions, since the treatment may aggravate irritated or compromised skin. Your provider can help confirm whether it’s a good fit for you.
Pairs Beautifully With Other Facials
Because dermaplaning clears away the outer layer of dead skin, it can help serums, peels, and other facial treatments absorb more effectively afterward. Many clients like to pair it with a hydrating facial or a chemical peel to help maximize the benefits of both treatments in the same visit. Talk to your esthetician about building it into your regular skincare routine.
